2023 Wente Chardonnay

2023 is our fourth vintage of Wente Chardonnay.  The wine was barrel fermented in new French Oak and elevaged for 17 months in 80% new French Oak.  The oak fermentation and the aging in mostly new French Oak give this wine a creamy round and lush texture.
When you look at the wine in the light it has a beautiful golden hay color. James and his team chose a slightly reduced amount of new oak when elevaging the wine and as a result, on the nose we have a lovely blend of oak and caramel which is extremely well integrated and balanced. This thoughtful approach emphasizes the character we see when the Wente Chardonnay clone is used in making wine.
On the palate the caramel turns to an expression of crème bruleé with a lovely undertone of melon and stone fruit. The finish of the wine is layered and gorgeous and evolves into a desire to take another sip.  This chardonnay is a perfect example of how versatile the varietal can be when pairing with food – mild, buttery, or creamy dishes are an easy pairing – fettuccini, lobster bisque and creamy mushroom soup.  Pork and seafood of all kinds including sashimi are great. Poultry, especially roasted chicken are fantastic selections and will complement the food and the wine. For the vegetarian think rich and creamy like vegetable risotto. The wine should be served at 56° – 57°.  Enjoy the wine now through 2030.
The wine is 100% Estate Chardonnay 100% Wente Clone from blocks B,Q,R. It was fermented in new French Oak and elevaged for 17 months in 80% new French Oak. The wine did not go through Malolactic fermentation.  The alcohol is 13.9% ABV.
